Eminent Victorians

Product# 460680274
Selling for $13.95

"Cardinal Manning * Florence Nightingale * Thomas Arnold * General Gordon Lytton Strachey's biographical essays on four 'eminent Victorians' dropped a depth-charge on Victorian England when the book was published in 1918. It ushered in the modern biography and raised the genre to the level of high literary art. Lytton Strachey approached his subjects with scepticism rather than reverence, and his iconoclastic wit and engaging narratives thrilled as well as shocked his contemporaries. Debunking Church, Public School and Empire, his portraits of Cardinal Manning, Florence Nightingale, Dr Arnold of Rugby, and General Gordon of Khartoum changed perceptions of the Victorians for a generation. This edition is unique in being fully annotated and in drawing on the full range of Strachey's manuscript materials and literary remains. John Sutherland is the author of s Heathcliff a Murderer? and three other literary puzzle books in OWC. He has edited numerous OWC Victorian classics, is a regular reviewer for the LRB, TLS, and Guardian, and writes a weekly column for the Gua"

Jude the Obscure

Product# 460680277
Selling for $8.95

"Hardy's last and most controversial novel, Jude the Obscure caused much outrage when it was published in 1895. Jude Fawley, poor and working-class, longs to study at the University of Christminster, but his ambitions to go to university are thwarted by class prejudice and his entrapment in a loveless marriage. He falls in love with his unconventional cousin, Sue Bridehead, and their refusal to marry when free to do so confirms their rejection of and by the world around them. The shocking fate that overtakes them is an indictment of a rigid and uncaring society. This is the first truly critical edition, taking account of the changes that Hardy made over twenty-five years. This revised edition has the first truly critical text, a new chronology and bibliography, and substantially revised notes."

Piers Plowman; A New Translation of the B-text

Product# 460680287
Selling for $8.95

"This is a new translation into contemporary English of one of the greatest poems of the English Middle Ages. Piers Plowman remains of enduring interest for its vivid picture of the whole life of medieval society, for its deeply imaginative religious vision, and for its passionate concern to see justice and truth prevail in our world."

The New Oxford Book of Sixteenth-Century Verse

Product# 460680290
Selling for $24.95

"The sixteenth century has long been acknowledged the 'Golden Age' of English verse--with such names as Shakespeare, Donne, and Spenser to its credit it could hardly be otherwise. Yet this anthology, which includes both undisputed masterpieces and achievements in hitherto neglected fields, is the first to reveal the full range and diversity of the century's poetic riches. What emerges is the most complete picture available of the poetic vitality of the sixteenth century."

The Major Works

Selling for $18.95

"John Dryden (1631-1700) was the leading writer of his day and a major cultural spokesman following the restoration of Charles II in 1660. His work includes political poems, satire, religious apologias, translations, critical essays and plays. This authoritative edition brings together a unique combination of Dryden's poetry and prose--all the major poems in full, literary criticism, and translations--to give the essence of his work and thinking. The collection includes the poems, MacFlecknoe and Absalom and Achitophel as well as Dryden's classical translations; his versions of Homer, Horace, and Ovid are reproduced in full. There are also substantial selections from Dryden's Virgil, Juvenal, and other classical writers. Fables, Ancient and Modern, taken from Chaucer, Ovid, Boccaccio, and Homer, his last and possibly greatest work, also appears in full."

Essays in Appreciation

Product# 460767938
Selling for $55.5

"The successor to Christopher Ricks's The Force of Poetry, this collection of critical essays still attends to poets and poetry: to John Donne's farewells to love, George Crabbe's constraints, Hardy's reading of history, and Robert Lowell as translator of Racine. But other literary worlds are also appreciated in Essays in Appreciation. Drama: Marlowe's Doctor Faustus and the plague. History: the Earl of Clarendon and composition. The novel: Jane Austen and mothering. Victorian lives: E. C. Gaskell's Charlotte Bronte; Froude's Carlyle; Hallam Tennyson's Tennyson; and George Eliot and her age. Philosophy: J. L. Austin and his art of allusion. Finally, critical questions: Literature and the matter of fact, and literary principles as against theory; plus two notes on criticism at the present time, one on talk of the canon, and the other on Empson and political criticism."

The Death of the Irreparable Injury Rule

Product# 460768134
Selling for $128

"The Death Of The Irreparable Injury Rule argues that ancient rule is defunct--that is almost never affects the results of cases. When a court denies equitable relief, Laycock demonstrates, its real reasons are derived from the interests of defendants or the legal system, and not from the adequacy of the plaintiff's legal remedy."

Reunion and Reaction; The Compromise of 1877 and the End of Reconstruction

Product# 460768139
Selling for $30

"Originally published in 1951, this classic work by one of America's foremost experts on Southern history presents an important new interpretation of the Compromise of 1877, forcing historians to revise previous attitudes towards the Reconstruction period, the history of the Republican party, and the realignment of forces that fought the Civil War. Because much of the negotiating occurred in secrecy, historians have known less about this Compromise than others before it. Now reissued with a new introduction by Woodward, 'Reunion and Reaction' gives us the other half of the story."

Nativism and Slavery; The Northern Know Nothings and the Politics of the 1850s

Product# 460768178
Selling for $128

"Although the United States has always portrayed itself as a sanctuary for the world's victim's of poverty and oppression, anti-immigrant movements have enjoyed remarkable success throughout American history. None attained greater prominence than the Order of the Star Spangled Banner, a fraternal order referred to most commonly as the Know Nothing party. Vowing to reduce the political influence of immigrants and Catholics, the Know Nothings burst onto the American political scene in 1854, and by the end of the following year they had elected eight governors, more than one hundred congressmen, and thousands of other local officials including the mayors of Boston, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Chicago. After their initial successes, the Know Nothings attempted to increase their appeal by converting their network of lodges into a conventional political organization, which they christened the 'American Party'. Recently, historians have pointed to the Know Nothings' success as evidence that ethnic and religious issues mattered more to nineteenth-century voters than better-known national issues such as slavery. In this important book, however, Anbinder argues that the Know Nothings' phenomenal success was inextricably linked to the firm stance their northern members took against the extension of slavery. Most Know Nothings, he asserts, saw slavery and Catholicism as interconnected evils that should be fought in tandem. Although the Know Nothings certainly were bigots, their party provided an early outlet for the anti-slavery sentiment that eventually led to the Civil War. Anbinder's study presents the first comprehensive history of America's most successful anti-immigrant movement, as wellas a major reinterpretation of the political crisis that led to the Civil War."
